Meet Myla Flores - Founder of The Birthing Place
And give to her campaign to bring a freestanding birthing center to the Bronx!
A few months ago, I had the pleasure of talking to a colleague I very much admire - Myla Flores. Myla is a New York based doula, lactation professional, childbirth educator and activist. Myla is also leading a team of BIPOC birth workers that is raising money to build a midwifery-led, freestanding birthing center in the Bronx!
To understand how significant this is you first need to know that New York City currently has 2 freestanding birthing centers and neither are located north of Central Park.
Part of Myla’s mission is to serve low-risk birthing people in a way that is “safe, serene, and deeply supportive.”
Myla says that The Birthing Place will be “committed to creating a space for families who want a more holistic, natural, and safe experience of childbirth.”
Myla emphasizes that because “midwifery-led, freestanding birth centers have been statistically proven to experience fewer complications and require fewer medical interventions than in-hospital births; the Birthing Place is in a unique position to change these outcomes and improve the health disparities of our most marginalized families.”
I gave to The Birthing Place last year. And today, on behalf of For Your Birth, I’m making a $100 contribution.
